In 2014, we collaborated with UNION SPORTS CO LTD, which is a well-known sports shop in Japan, to make newly designed shoe bags and tote bags. When I was a high school student in Japan, these bags had already being produced by DIADORA and UNION SPORTS. By the time I had started to work on the project, the bags had already been sold to over 50,000 customers. I suggested that we could be more effective in increasing sales if the bag design were more responsive to customer feedback. First of all, since the store staff were more familiar with their customers’ evolving taste, I elicited their input in choosing the color and pattern of the bags for their retail outlet from a project book with various templates that I had designed. Also because customers had complained that the print of the bags came off in the wash, I chose a more durable print method, and also added design details such as a drawstring to make the bag more convenient and versatile. As a sales strategy, we manufactured only 2,000 bags, so that these value-added products could be advertised as a limited edition. As a result, our client sold all of the bags within 3 months. I was really proud to see that these bags were designed with input from the front-line staff and most importantly, the customers.
